The Howlin' Dog Vintage Jazz Band

Traditional Jazz
The Howlin' Dog Vintage Jazz Band

The band was formed in 2002 by members of the Lighthouse Swing Band along with a few friends, mostly from the Kincardine area . The musicians were seeking an opportunity to play some old jazz and standards that were becoming harder and harder to find for both the players and the people who enjoy listening to them. New Orleans Jazz and blues with a bit of swing and a few ballads thrown in for good measure have remained the staple of the band’s repertoire over the ensuing years. WHERE DID THEY GET THAT NAME ? The bands first couple practices were held in Mildmay which at the time was the home of bassist Karen Weber who owned a beautiful yellow lab named Jake. Whenever the band played a tune in the key of B flat Jake joined in by howling right along. When the band got it’s first job and was trying to come up with a name for the group they just happened to be working on a number in B flat and Jake joined right in. The choice became instantly obvious to trumpeter Dave Jewett, and it stuck. The frontline is made up of Dave Jewett on trumpet and flugelhorn . Dave is very busy musician who plays with several groups in the Toronto and Hamilton area . Steve Hasbury on clarinet and saxes and Dave Schmalz on trombone fill out the frontline. Rhythm comes from Ron Daniels on guitar , Karen Weber on bass and Mike Kelley on drums. Karen Weber and Dave Schmalz look after vocals. Based in Kincardine the group plays up and down the Lake Huron shoreline from Sarnia to Collingwood and all throughout Southern & Central Ontario . Over the past few years they performed at many music festivals and celebrations, performed in concert for members of the London Jazz Society, and the City of Burlington summer music series and Jazz by the Bay in the town of the Blue Mountains The band provides followers with an email newsletter detailing upcoming appearances and has a website at www.howlindogjazz.com .For more detailed information contact Dave Schmalz at 519 396-0077.
